Itinerary

Day 1

We travel east today through Illinois and Indiana into Ohio. We are getting closer to the beautiful fall foliage of West Virginia.

Day 2

This morning we tour Mosser Glass in Cambridge, Ohio, manufacturer of Carnival, Vaseline and Opalescent glass. Sit back and take in the spectacular fall foliage of the Ohio River Valley as we travel through the river town of Marietta, located at the confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio rivers. We cross the Ohio River into West Virginia and continue to Parkersburg to enjoy lunch at the historic Blenner-hassett Hotel. Following lunch, we board an authentic sternwheeler, plying the waters of the Ohio to enjoy a guided tour of Blennerhassett Island. We continue to Elkins and our hotel for the next two nights.

Day 3

After breakfast, we have some time to visit historic downtown Elkins, before we board the New Tygart Flyer. This ride features two separate mountain grades, an “S” curve tunnel, passage into a 1,500 feet deep canyon with steep, densely forested slopes and a high bridge over the rushing Shavers Fork of the Cheat River. After some time to relax at the hotel, we will have dinner at Graceland Restaurant. Graceland sets on the campus of Davis and Elkins College and overlooks the town of Elkins.  Following dinner, enjoy a performance at the Gandy Dancer Theatre. No matter how old you are, the “Gandy Dancers” bring you out of your seat with their charming, high energy performances!

Day 4

This morning during our tour of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, we will learn how the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope is used to uncover new knowledge about the universe. Lunch will be at the Starlight Café. This afternoon, we board the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park Train. The steam-driven locomotive takes us through two switchbacks to Whittaker Station for a short layover before returning to Cass. We continue to Lewisburg, where we check in to our hotel. This evening dinner will be at Food & Friends, known for their great taste, time after time. Food & Friends was featured on The Food Network’s, “The Best Of” list.

Day 5

At the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, we ride through the dark passages of a vintage coal mine. In addition to the mine, we tour the period coal camp buildings situated throughout the grounds. This afternoon, if traffic conditions allow, we will stop at the Canyon Rim Visitor’s Center in Glen Jean, WV and/or Hawks Nest State Park in Ansted, WV. Both locations feature spectacular views of the New River Gorge. We travel on to Barboursville and our hotel for the next two nights.

Day 6

Today, the New River Train will travel through the famous Grand Canyon of the East, the 65-mile long New River Gorge in all its fall splendor. At Hinton, we’ll enjoy the annual fall festival in this scenic mountain town. We’ll have lunch on our own and browse the arts and crafts street fair. From here, we’ll board our motorcoach and continue back to Barboursville.

We travel through the green rolling hills of Kentucky’s Bluegass Region on our way home.
