On Fort Myers Beach enjoy the quiet joys of plucking shells from the sand and watching egrets pick across the tidal lagoons, as the sun dips brilliantly beyond the magnificent Gulf of Mexico. Welcome to paradise, where the average daytime temperature hovers in the low 70’s in the months of January and February.

We cross San Carlos Bay via the Sanibel Causeway onto Sanibel Island. When Ponce de Leon discovered the Florida coast in 1513, he called Sanibel Island the Costa de Caracoles, or the “Coast of Seashells.” With every tide, thousands of shells are washed ashore. Created by nature to protect the mainland, the palm-tree and flower-lined islands are famous for their beaches and the incredible variety of shells that wash up on their shores. Seashells carpet the beaches which are sandy playgrounds for those who want to enjoy a relaxed vacation. Our first activity on Sanibel Island will be a visit to the Ding Darling Refuge. Delight in the 90-minute narrated Ding Darling Refuge Tram Tour, where experienced naturalists will help you spot wildlife most visitors would never see. As the road meanders past tidal mudflats and mangrove forests, roseate spoonbills, white ibis, little blue herons, reddish egrets, brown pelican, osprey and other colorful birds can be seen feeding, resting, and preening. See many other species that make the migratory stopover of “Ding” Darling part of their annual flight corridor. No trip on Wildlife Drive is complete without stopping by Alligator Curve. Hear fascinating tales of the Calusa Indians and the early days of Sanibel and south Florida.  Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge is part of the largest mangrove ecosystem in the US and is known for its spectacular migratory bird populations and wading bird populations.
