Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup

Post

Feel the thunder of prehistoric beasts as they rumble by during this fall tradition in South Dakota’s beautiful Black Hills. Ever since park rangers started rounding up some 1,200 head of buffalo each fall for the annual branding, sorting and vaccinating, visitors have been fascinated by this Old West tradition.

What a day this will be! Rise and shine bright and early to take in the exciting annual buffalo roundup. Make sure you bring your own bag lawn chair, camera, binoculars, sun screen and rain gear. Feel the thunder as buffalo rumble by and park personnel, cowboys and cowgirls do their best to drive the park’s herd into the corrals – passing two designated viewing areas along the way. After the herd is safely in the corrals, the park staff will sort, brand, test and select certain animals for the fall sale, held later in November. Enjoy lunch on the grounds before heading out for Rapid City. After a brief rest at the hotel, depart for the Fort Hays Chuckwagon Supper & Cowboy Music Show. Wander through the original set from the movie “Dances with Wolves.” Experience the west with a delicious original chuckwagon supper and cowboy music variety show for a hand clappin’, toe tappin’, belly shakin’ great time!
